British Political Thought in History, Literature and Theory, 1500-1800 - Original PDF
نویسندگان: David Armitage خلاصه: The history of British political thought has been one of the most fertile fields of Anglo-American historical writing in the last half-century. David Armitage brings together an interdisciplinary and international team of authors to consider the impact of this scholarship on the study of early modern British history, English literature, and political theory. Leading historians survey the impact of the history of political thought on the 'new' histories of Britain and Ireland; eminent literary scholars offer novel critical methods attentive to literary form, genre, and language; and distinguished political theorists treat the relationship of history and theory in studies of rights and privacy. The outstanding examples of critical practice collected here will encourage the emergence of fresh research on the historical, critical, and theoretical study of the English-speaking world in the period around 1500-1800. This volume celebrates the contribution of the Folger Institute to British studies over many years.

A Natural History of Pragmatism - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Joan Richardson خلاصه: Joan Richardson provides a fascinating and compelling account of the emergence of the quintessential American philosophy: pragmatism. She demonstrates pragmatism's engagement with various branches of the natural sciences and traces the development of Jamesian pragmatism from the late nineteenth century through modernism, following its pointings into the present. Richardson combines strands from America's religious experience with scientific information to offer interpretations that break new ground in literary and cultural history. This book exemplifies the value of interdisciplinary approaches to producing literary criticism. In a series of highly original readings of Edwards, Emerson, William and Henry James, Stevens, and Stein, A Natural History of Pragmatism tracks the interplay of religious motive, scientific speculation, and literature in shaping an American aesthetic. Wide-ranging and bold, this groundbreaking book will be essential reading for all students and scholars of American literature.
Cultures of Mass Tourism - Original PDF
Cultures of Mass Tourism - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Pau Obrador Pons, Mike Crang, Penny Travlou, Pau Obrador Pons, Mike Crang, Penny Travlou خلاصه: With more than 230 million international tourists a year, the Mediterranean region is the largest tourist destination in the world. Indeed, it is now less united by olive, grain and vine cultivation than the fortnightly pulse of the package tour, the circulation of resort types and the shared culture of sun-seeking tourism. This book argues that its economic importance is matched by its significance as cultural and aesthetic phenomena. Mass tourism has brought about new social and cultural formations that mix global, national and local influences. There has, as yet, been little analysis of these new cultural formations. This book offers a series of insights into some of the key sites of mass Mediterranean tourism, including the beach, the island, the tourist resort and the coastal hotel. It also focuses on the 'mass' element and reflects on the 'banal' experiences of the package tourist, as well as the serial and depthless spaces that are mushrooming along the coast and the enchantments, dissolutions and dreams that saturate them. Moving away from the notion of authentic places corrupted by mass tourism, it examines new forms and spaces created, co-produced by locals and tourists, seeing them as postmodern with reworked meanings such as the recoding the ancient with irony and kitsch. It also develops an approach which is sensitive to social practices and embodied performances such as photography, hotel activities and nightlife. Finally, the book looks at the complex materilities of mass tourism, as well as the many networks that make it possible. All in all, this volume provides an up-to the minute key reference on the cultures of mass tourism.

The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World - Original PDF
نویسندگان: R. Murray Schafer خلاصه: The soundscape--a term coined by the author--is our sonic environment, the ever-present array of noises with which we all live. Beginning with the primordial sounds of nature, we have experienced an ever-increasing complexity of our sonic surroundings. As civilization develops, new noises rise up around us: from the creaking wheel, the clang of the blacksmith’s hammer, and the distant chugging of steam trains to the “sound imperialism” of airports, city streets, and factories. The author contends that we now suffer from an overabundance of acoustic information and a proportionate diminishing of our ability to hear the nuances and subtleties of sound. Our task, he maintains, is to listen, analyze, and make distinctions.

When Blood and Bones Cry Out: Journeys Through the Soundscape of Healing and Reconciliation - Original PDF
نویسندگان: John Paul Lederach, Angela Jill Lederach خلاصه: Around the world communities that have suffered the trauma of unspeakable violence--in Liberia, Somalia, West Africa, Columbia, and elsewhere--are struggling to recover and reconcile, searching for ways not just to survive but to heal. In When Blood and Bones Cry Out, John Paul Lederach, a pioneer of peace-building, and his daughter, Angela Jill Lederach, show how communities can recover and reconnect through the power of making music, creating metaphors, and telling their extraordinary stories of suffering and survival. Instead of relying on more common linear explanations of healing and reconciliation, the Lederachs demonstrate how healing is circular, dynamic, and continuing, even in the midst of ongoing violence. They explore the concept of "social healing," a profoundly important intermediary step between active warfare and reconciliation. Social healing focuses on the lived experience of those who have suffered protracted violence and their need to give voice to that experience, both individually and collectively. Giving voice, speaking the unspeakable, in words and sounds that echo throughout traumatized communities, can have enormous healing power. Indeed, the Lederachs stress the remarkable effects of sound and vibration through tales of Tibetan singing bowls, Van Morrison's transcendent lyrics, the voices of mothers in West Africa, and their own personal journeys. And they include inspiring stories of transformation: a mass women's protest movement in Liberia that forces leaders to keep negotiating until a peace agreement is signed; elders in Somalia who walk between warring clans year after year to encourage dialogue; former child soldiers who run drum workshops and grow gardens in refugee camps; and rape victims in Sierra Leone who express their pain in poetry. With equal measures of insight and compassion, When Blood and Bones Cry Out offers a promising new approach to healing traumatized communities.
The Slight Edge - Original PDF
The Slight Edge - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Jeff Olson خلاصه: Lesson 1: Every day we have to choose between success or failure The philosophy behind The Slight Edge is that success is the result of repetitive productive actions over a consistent period. When you adopt this mindset, your actions have to follow immediately for them to work. Therefore, everything we do each day must coincide with our burning desire to achieve success. This is something that’ll occupy your mind even when you’re not actively aware of it, such as when you’re thinking about what you should eat, or when you choose to go to bed earlier instead of losing sleep. First, you have to choose your predominant state of mind. Either you have the blaming mindset or the winning mindset. The first category likes to play the victim, and blame their misfortune in life for their failures. The second type of people takes responsibility for their actions, especially when life throws challenges at them. You should aim to become more like the second type, and then examine your focus. Are you oriented toward the future or the past? Instead of living in regret, you should take your past experiences and turn them into life lessons. The two sets of people differ not because life treated one better than the other, but because of how they chose to respond to it. Every day you have a choice between actively building a successful life, or staying right where you are. Lesson 2: Learn to appreciate the invisible results of your work to achieve what 95% of people don’t It is estimated that only five percent of people achieve their goals in life. These people not only understand what The Slight Edge is all about, but they’re also willing to put in the work that 95% of their peers aren’t. Therefore, if you think that small everyday choices don’t make a difference in the long run, you’ll have to think again. What makes the difference between those who achieve their goals and those who don’t lie in our everyday choices? We can either do that 15 minutes workout, or we don’t. We can choose to eat a healthy meal for today or go for junk food. However, these small, day-to-day choices will eventually define our future. By the time you can observe that someone has a competitive edge over you, it becomes too late to catch up on them. That is because the mundane things which are part of a daily routine seem invisible while you’re doing them, but as they add up in time, they’re building your future. Successful people know and leverage this concept for their benefit. In contrast, unsuccessful people live in the moment and go by the philosophy that what they’re doing at the moment doesn’t matter. Truth is, success is gradual, and so is failure. If you want to make your future self proud, you’ll have to do something about it in the present day, every day. Lesson 3: Implementing the three-step goal-setting process can put you miles ahead of the game If you want to meet your goals, you need to be able to set them. Implementing the three-step goal-setting process can put you miles ahead of the game. It all starts with writing down your goals, then visualizing them daily, and developing an action plan. Write down your goals clearly and simply. Then, read them aloud. This helps cement the idea in your head and make sure they’re clear on paper (or computer screen). Writing down objectives is also proven to boost the chance of you achieving them and remembering them long term. Look at them daily: You should look at the list of goals every day—either right when you wake up or right before bed—and ask yourself if you’ve done anything toward those goals that day. If not, why not? What could you do differently tomorrow? Try making some small changes in your daily routine so that these small changes add up over time until they help you achieve those bigger goals! Some people find that vision boards help, as they’re always there to look at in times of distress or when you lack momentum. Develop a plan: Once you’ve written down your goals, looked at them every day, and asked yourself why they haven’t been achieved yet, it’s time to develop a plan for moving forward with them! Set your end goal and then divide it into smaller chunks and bite-sized objectives.
