The book: On the taboo against knowing who you are - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Alan Watts خلاصه: My dad gave me this book when I was traveling back to college sophomore year. If you've read it you might think, "Oh, that is such a sweet and special gift," so maybe I should clarify: he stumbled across it when he was cleaning out his bookshelves and he basically just tossed it at me. There wasn't anything ceremonious about it. Anyway, I really liked it. It was my literary introduction to Zen philosophy, and it resonated with me immediately. Incidentally, I read it three months after my first trip. I think that had a lot to do with my appreciation of it. Drawbacks: Watts quotes Jesus a few times. When you go to look up the quote, it's from a non-canonical gospel, I think The Gospel of Thomas. This made it instantly lose cred with my Christian biblical scholar friend with whom I tried to share it ("Jesus never said that!!"). The more I read of Watts, the more I found him making unsupported claims against modern Christianity. Also, he tends to say the same thing in all of his books, over and over, so if you've read one, you've basically read 'em all. Still, it's a great book for reminding yourself that you always have the here and now to just be. I've reread parts of it several times.

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You - Original PDF
نویسندگان: John C. Maxwell خلاصه: This is one of the few books that I have both read and taught on. There is much wisdom in this book, and in some ways, so much so that it is hard to keep up. This book has simple, yet elegant analogies, and it provides insight into a "better" way to manage. By following just one of the principles outlined in this book, a young or more mature leader will surely gain knowledge and be bettered by the experience.

You Are Here: Exposing the Vital Link Between What We Do and What That Does to Our Planet - PDF
نویسندگان: Thomas M. Kostigen خلاصه: In this groundbreaking book, the New York Times bestselling coauthor of The Green Book Thomas M. Kostigen reveals the vital missing link in today's environmental crisis: how we as individuals are connected to the most tenuous geography on the planet. Despite the recent prominence of ''green'' issues in the news, the direct relationship between our actions and the earth is too often ignored. But the seemingly insignificant things we do every day have the power to literally alter the landscape in the ongoing battle to resuscitate the planet. There are living narratives of climate change that reveal the consequences of our everyday actions. You Are Here allows us to both comprehend and care about what's happening in these encampments of ruin. Kostigen shows us what may well be a glimpse of our future in Linfen City, China, one of the most polluted places on the planet. From a garbage patch twice the size of Texas in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, to the melting arctic ice shelf, to the flood zone that is Mumbai, India, to the dwindling rainforests of the Amazon, You Are Here describes the environmental crisis in a way we can feel, see, and touch. Kostigen presents us with opportunities for change and shows us how to take action on the spot, wherever we are. Combining groundbreaking research and page-turning frontline reporting, Kostigen pulls back the curtain on the most pressing and provocative issues of the day and in so doing we see the earth and our place on it in a brand new light.

Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?: The Nine Inner Strengths You Need to Overcome Self-Defeating Tendencies at Work - PDF
نویسندگان: Charles E. Watson خلاصه: A management professor and a religion professor team up to provide a fresh, penetrating look at the obstacles that prevent people from achieving their full potential. As authors Charles Watson and Thomas Idinopulos demonstrate, inner demons like a lack of integrity, mindless conformity, passivity, or greed conspire to keep people from doing their best. But people can avoid becoming their own worst enemies by using their uniquely human capacities to their fullest—to be more responsible, more creative, more self-disciplined, and more honest. Using these strengths, the authors show, makes it easier to resolve ethical dilemmas, attain peak performance without burning out, maintain a positive outlook, and, ultimately, succeed in achieving treasured personal and professional goals. As Watson and Idinopulos demonstrate, inner demons like a lack of integrity, mindless conformity, passivity, mediocrity, or greed conspire to keep people from doing their best. But people can avoid becoming their own worst enemies by using their uniquely human capacities to their fullest: to be more responsible, more insightful, more creative, more self-disciplined, more honest, and more concerned about others. Using these strengths, the authors show, makes it easier to resolve ethical dilemmas, attain peak performance without burning out, maintain a positive outlook, and, ultimately, succeed in achieving treasured personal and professional goals. The world of work is filled with treacherous shoals that constantly test the integrity, fortitude, and tolerance of employees. The stresses can be incapacitating. Faced with competing agendas, high expectations, sclerotic bureaucracies, and scarce resources, many people fall prey to demons that sap their energy or, worse, encourage them to act against their own interests by being dishonest or cutting corners. Are You Your Own Worst Enemy? shows readers how to take responsibility for their actions and their happiness. It discusses the on-going pressures, temptations, and traps in the workplace and how ordinary people can manage them constructively to remain effective and true to their ideals. Specifically, it shows how learning the following behaviors and attitudes can help people become more productive, more valuable, and more fully satisfied: -Develop the capacity to make things happen. -Make the most of who you are. -Sharpen thinking skills. -Be the kind of person others want to be around. -Break the chains of mindless routine. -Become an effective learner and continue learning. -Master the art of self-discipline. -Act with integrity. -Be of service to others. Using dozens of engaging stories from people in all types of organizations, the authors show how to overcome self-defeating behavior. The result for readers is a blueprint for success, reduced stress, better work/life balance, and fulfillment.
All the Mathematics You Missed But Need to Know for Graduate School - PDF
All the Mathematics You Missed But Need to Know for Graduate School - PDF
نویسندگان: Thomas A. Garrity, Lori Pedersen خلاصه: I will admit upfront that I got suckered in by the title. As I write this, I'm somewhere on the downhill slope of my own graduate studies in mechanical engineering, at a university with a very strong mechanics program. I've struggled in some of said mechanics classes because of my relatively limited mathematics background, so this sounded like a book that was right up my alley. Garrity picks a wide range of mathematical topics, from sets to vector analysis to geometry to differential equations, and briefly covers the main points of each of the fields. He lacks true rigor (even admits it in the preface), but that isn't the point- the book is a survey, and Garrity references many books in and at the end of each chapter. If you find yourself working in one of the areas covered, I would image that this book would be an excellent place to go for an introduction/refresher to the main concepts, and then point you in the proper direction for further study.

You Are G8, We Are 6 Billion: The Truth Behind the Genoa Protests - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Jonathan Neale خلاصه: Here Jonathan Neale has attempted two books in one - a personal chronicle of the Genoa protests, and a scholarly examination of the issues they were protesting. The former works a little, and the latter doesn't work at all. As a participant among the whopping 300,000 protestors at the Genoa G8 summit, Neale's story from the trenches is an occasionally valuable account of the beliefs of a movement that has been denigrated and belittled by the mainstream press. Especially terrifying are his eyewitness accounts of police brutality against individual protestors, who are given a human face through Neale's support. However, he tends to criticize the various social movements and interests that have come together into the anti-globalization effort for not cooperating and integrating their beliefs, but offers absolutely no organizational or social knowledge that could offer potential solutions to that problem. Meanwhile Neale tends to add a sappy human focus to the protest movement, adding unnecessary descriptions of his personal issues, and for some reason following the love life of a fellow protestor named Nicola.
