The Meaning of Life - Epub + Converted PDF
نویسندگان: Russell Hasan خلاصه: The Meaning of Life: My Answer to Jordan B. Peterson According to Objectivism, what is the meaning of life? The meaning of life is: You. You are the meaning of your life. The meaning of your life is you. There is nothing else. Your life, and you living it, and the joy, and sadness, and whatever it means to you, that is the meaning of your life, that is the meaning of life for you. Jesus Christ is not the meaning of your life. Helping the poor, and Karl Marx, is not the meaning of your life. No. You, and only you, are the meaning of your own life. But that means that you have to work, and work hard, to create a meaningful life, to create meaning and intention and purpose and achievement for your life, to make your life meaningful. You have to do it, but it is something only you can do. Now, you could choose to have Jesus Christ be the meaning of your life, and many people have done that, but then that is about you, it isn't really about Jesus Christ. It's about what Jesus Christ means to you; it is not about Jesus Christ himself. And, likewise, you could choose for the meaning of your life to be helping others, but then it isn't really about helping others, it's really about you and the meaning that you create for yourself by choosing that as your purpose in life, as the focus of your life. People think that "What is the meaning of life?" is an impossible question to answer, but if you change it into "What is the meaning of my life?" then it becomes possible for you to answer it. But if you fail, if you do not create meaning and find meaningful people, events, emotions, goals, etc., in your life, then you fall into the void, the abyss, nihilism, then your life would have no meaning

HE ROUTLEDGE HANDBOOK OF ACCOUNTING ETHICS - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Eileen Z. Taylor and Paul F. Williams خلاصه: 1 INTRODUCTION Eileen Z. Taylor and Paul F. Williams “Ethics” and “morals” are two terms about which there is ambiguity. Some scholars consider the terms to be synonymous. Others make a distinction that ethics pertains to right conduct vis-à-vis others, while morals pertains to one’s personal sense of right conduct; still others reverse that distinction. Philosophers tend to regard the distinction between “ethics” and “morals” to be that ethics pertains to a centuries-old conversation about how we decide what is good and bad, right and wrong, while morals is the content of good and bad, right and wrong. The perspective on “ethics” taken in this book is this latter sense; thus the title Companion to Accounting Ethics. The book’s purpose is not to be a handbook of accounting rights and wrongs but rather a collec- tion of conversations employed by educators to assist students of accounting to become more attuned to accounting’s ethical aspects and to become more critical thinkers about the ethical complexities of the function of accounting in human society. As a social science, accounting is the creation of people, for the purpose of accounting for transactions (generally monetary) between and among groups of people. Accounting does not exist without people, and its rules of the day are determined by people; it is mutable and wholly dependent on both the decisions made by people with economic power and acceptance of those decisions by those same people. Similarly, ethics are enacted by people, and the ethicality of an action is determined by the individual affected by the action, as well as by the collective societal acceptance or rejection of an action. Accounting, because it is people driven, inherently has an ethical component. Every deci- sion about how to account for a transaction at some point affects an individual, either directly or indirectly. For example, decisions about recording revenue affect those whose income is commission-based. Decisions about recording an expense affects taxes paid (and received by the government for the benefit of society). Our primary goal with this book is to call attention to the intersectionality of accounting and ethics and to encourage students and researchers to consider the ethical implications of accounting decisions

نویسندگان: Dennis Deninger خلاصه: xv Preface Athletic competitions have affected how people perceive life and their roles within social groups since the ancient Olympic Games began in Greece in 776 BC, and most certainly back even farther before recorded history. On the North American continent for more than 1,000 years, the game of lacrosse has affected the social rela- tions among groups of native people, their tribes, and their families. Before a game, people would meet for ceremonial feasts and agree upon the stakes and rules. These meetings helped develop relations between nations, families, and competitors. In some cases, tribes would play a game of lacrosse to settle disputes instead of taking up arms against each other in battle. Sport continues to be a powerful social force, disseminating and reinforcing the values that regulate how people behave, setting examples for how to go about attain- ing goals and determining acceptable solutions for problems. And it presents indi- viduals and groups with a means to escape from the reality of their daily lives, if only for a few hours, into a world of entertainment and celebration populated by talented, charismatic stars capable of remarkable performances, powerful leaders, and teams, all with their legions of adoring followers. The word “sport” itself came into English in the late 14th century as “disport,” meaning a diversion that carried one away from work or serious matters, a recreation or amusement. Its origin is in the Latin verb “portare,” to carry. When you imagine how difficult daily life would have been in the 1300s, any recreation or amusement must have been a relief and a welcome escape

نویسندگان: DAEGAN MILLER خلاصه: Then the coal company came with the world’s largest shovel, And they tortured the timber, and stripped all the land. Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken, And they wrote it all down as the progress of man. John Prine, “Paradise”1 What happens when the past’s oldest witness comes crashing down dead? A new day will dawn . . . but over what? Where are we, who are we, when the bough breaks? Bostonians opened their eyes on a Wednesday morning in 1876 to opaque February skies bleakly blanketing a city made suddenly strange. At 7 p.m. the evening before, the enormous Great Elm on the famous Boston Common had been toppled by a hard wind.2 Of course, trees fall all the time with never a thought spared them, but the Great Elm was dif- ferent. It was famous in the nineteenth-century as an emissary from the past, and it appears ubiquitously in prose, poem, and print, a people’s treasured heirloom, believed to be among the last living witnesses to the young nation’s milestones; its loss was disorienting. Paul Revere, on his 1775 midnight ride, was rumored to have passed by the tree

Education and Economic Development - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Daniela-Mihaela Neamţu خلاصه: The foundation of present-day society is based on human resources as a key element for growth and based on education for economic and social prosperity. It has become a true fact that current development relies heav- ily on education and culture as a business model, some communities hav- ing their own internalized ways, while other cultures provide for a more open society. Consequently, education in modern society has become a field of study as well as an object of study for teachers, economists, soci- ologists, and many other researchers. The progress of a society, considered from both an economic and a social perspective, is accomplished by acquir- ing knowledge allowing the human potential to be used in the best pos- sible way in various conditions. Education stands for the foundation of a free and open society, the cornerstone of a powerful and sound state. From a professional point of view, education represents the key foundation of human resource develop- ment worldwide. Globally, society itself heads continuously toward a knowledge-based economy, where education and performance are con- stantly judged against performance indexes, as well as a comparison index, among countries. Numbers and narratives lead to the transformation and valorization of strategic resources based on innovation, learning, and chang

Handbook of Hope Theory, Measures, & Applications - PDF
نویسندگان: C.R. Snyder خلاصه: This Handbook of Hope simply would not have happened without a small army of graduate students who, over the past decade, have come into my office one by one and suggested yetanother angle from which we could view hope. In that sense, what has come to be called hope theory has been like a gemstone that, when held to the light, sends shimmers of ideas about yet other possible implications or experiments. I have produced previous theories about reactions to personal feedback, uniqueness seeking, excuse making, and reality negotiation, hue none of chose have continued co produce the sufficiently intriguing questions to get me revved up for yet another experiment. Hope theory has been a great energizer at a time in my life when I have needed it. For the past seven years I have had a severe, unrelenting, and undiagnosed chest pain that is with me from my fim waking moments to the time th.at I slip off into sleep. Although I have been taking powerful pain killers, I think that none of those pills matches the positive effects of my getting lost in theory and research and work- ing with my students. At age 55 (by the time this book is published), I still enjoy the theory and bench science to the same degree that I did as a brand new 27-year- old assistant professor here at Kansas. And so, I have much for which to be th:.ink- ful.

Geography of Happiness A Spatial Analysis of Subjective Well-Being - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Eric Vaz خلاصه: Recent advances in spatial analysis have led to a growing interest in applying geocomputation methods to complex issues (Du et al., 2020), often defined over large datasets framing socioeconomic variables (Ekbia et al., 2015) and the natural environment (Bryan et al., 2011). Much of this work has been carried out to optimize decision-making and lead to a better quality of life, economic growth and social stability (Higgins et al., 2014; Rosu et al., 2015; Ahlfeldt et al., 2020). Thanks to the advances of computational power, spatial analysis has reached a new stage, where nonlinear modelling approaches combined with stochastic modelling allow for a better understanding of the geographical environment (Silva et al., 2020) and there- fore foster more accurate decision-making (Carver, 2019). This decision-making has focused predominantly on sustainable development, leading to better life quality, where spatial information on the natural environment has brought a key role, partic- ularly in ecology, to understand the present and offer a more sustainable future. From an anthropocentric perspective, wellbeing is the relation of humankind’s social, economic, and environmental stability, maximizing the opportunities for sustainable development while leading to better life quality. This holistic approach of wellbeing closely rem
