You Say More Than You Think: A 7-Day Plan for Using the New Body Language to Get What You Want - PDF
نویسندگان: Janine Driver, Mariska van Aalst خلاصه: Mind not only what people say, but how they say it; and if you have any sagacity, youmay discover more truth by your eyes than by your ears. People can say what they will, but theycannot look just as they will; and their looks frequently reveal what their words are calculated toconceal.—LORD CHESTERFIELD (1694–1773), LETTER TO HIS SONImagine a mirror suddenly dropped down before you during your last meeting, salesnegotiation, date, friendly get-together, or confrontation.Would you be able to spot the subtle nonverbal clues that may be sabotaging you in thesesituations—and keeping you from reaching your fullest potential? Are your facial expressions awkward? Are your hand gestures not quite right?Do you appear weak or arrogant or older than you are?Does the way you shake hands discourage people from doing business with you?Does your body language clash with your words?Do you have a glaring flaw that everyone notices but you?We interact with other people all day long, in every meaningful moment in our lives. Butwe don’t always understand what they’re thinking—nor do they understand our thoughts. If wedon’t have well-developed social perception, we may experience repeated failures: losing to thecompetition, job interview bombs, failed dates, trampled trust. But if we can hone that perception, learn to read people better, and communicate more effectively, that knowledge helps us in everypart of our lives. We start to enjoy more exciting career opportunities, more honest friendships, better dating prospects, even more frequent wins at work!Look at the successful people who cross your path daily. I’d bet most have at least twocharacteristics in common. First, they possess a sense of serene self-awareness. They seemcomfortable in their own skin. Second, they have a better-than-average ability to connect withother people. They know how to put people at ease and create an immediate sense of rapport. Both of these traits stem directly from a strong command of body language.Uncovering the mysteries of body language—how people communicate their thoughtsand feelings without saying a word—is a powerful first step toward mastering any socialsituation. All successful people know that the ability to detect and react to the split-second signalsthat skim across people’s bodies hundreds of times each day is crucial to getting what they wantin life. When something they’re doing isn’t effective, they’ve learned how to adjust their actionsto maximize the moment

You Better Work! - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Kai Fikentscher خلاصه: You Better Work! is the first detailed study of underground dance music or UDM, a phenomenon that has its roots in the overlap and cross-fertilization of African American and gay cultural sensibilities that have occurred since the 1970s. UDM not only predates and includes disco, but also constitutes a unique performance practice in the history of American social dance. Taking New York City as its geographic focus, "You Better Work!" shows how UDM functions in the lives of its DJs and dancers, and how it is used as the primary identifier of an urban subculture shaped essentially by the relationships between music, dance, and marginality. Kai Fikentscher goes beyond stereotypical images of club and disco to explore the cult and culture of the DJ, the turntable and vinyl recordings as musical instruments, and the vital relationship between music and dance at underground clubs. Including interviews, photographs, and an extensive discography, this ethnographic account tells the story of a celebration of collective marginality through music and dance

At last!’ said a woman with a voice like ice.The man behind the torch snickered. ‘Who was it thatsaid the best place to hide something was in plain sight? What an idiot.’ His accent was odd, ominous.‘Just do it!’ hissed the woman.prologueGrasping the heavy torch tight in his gloved hand, the man brought it down like an axe. The surface had ahoneycomb sort of texture comprised of many holes of varyingsizes. A thin band of silver circled the orb, dividing it into twoequal hemispheres. The woman pushed aside her white-blonde hair andheld the mysterious object to her perfectly shaped ear. Math (Stop Faking It! Finally Understanding Science So You Can Teach It) (PB169X7) - PDF
نویسندگان: William C. Robertson خلاصه: Flummoxed by formulas? Queasy about equations? Perturbed by pi? Now you can stop cursing over calculus and start cackling over Math, the newest volume in Bill Robertson's accurate and amusing Stop Faking It! books. Like the other six titles in this award-winning NSTA Press series, Math is meant for homework-helping parents, math-averse science teachers, and homeschoolers. It's written for everyone who lacks the background to teach with confidence and is sick of relying on avoidance strategies. As Robertson sees it, too many people view mathematics as a set of rules to be followed, procedures to memorize, and theorems to apply. This book takes a unique approach by focusing on the reasoning behind the rules, from math basics all the way up to a brief introduction to calculus. Among the questions it covers: Why do you 'carry' numbers when adding? Why do you need a common denominator when adding fractions? (Robertson says you don't, by the way!) What's behind the process of cross-multiplying? Where does the number pi come from? And who in the heck invented those strange formulas for area and volume? As usual, Robertson provides clear explanations, irreverent illustrations, and easy-to-follow activities. But he spares you problem sets to do or tests to take. That's because Math is not so much a book that will help you do math as it is a guide to understanding it conceptually.

I Am You: The Metaphysical Foundations for Global Ethics - PDF
نویسندگان: Daniel Kolak خلاصه: Borders enclose and separate us. We assign to them tremendous significance. Along them we draw supposedly uncrossable boundaries within which we believe our individual identities begin and end, erecting the metaphysical dividing walls that enclose each one of us into numerically identical, numerically distinct, entities: persons. Do the borders between us—physical, psychological, neurological, causal, spatial, temporal, etc.—merit the metaphysical significance ordinarily accorded them? The central thesis of I Am You is that our borders do not signify boundaries between persons. We are all the same person. Variations on this heretical theme have been voiced periodically throughout the ages (the Upanishads, Averroës, Giordano Bruno, Josiah Royce, Schrödinger, Fred Hoyle, Freeman Dyson). In presenting his arguments, the author relies on detailed analyses of recent formal work on personal identity, especially that of Derek Parfit, Sydney Shoemaker, Robert Nozick, David Wiggins, Daniel C. Dennett and Thomas Nagel, while incorporating the views of Descartes, Leibniz, Wittgenstein, Schopenhauer, Kant, Husserl and Brouwer. His development of the implied moral theory is inspired by, and draws on, Rawls, Sidgwick, Kant and again Parfit. The traditional, commonsense view that we are each a separate person numerically identical to ourselves over time, i.e., that personal identity is closed under known individuating and identifying borders—what the author calls Closed Individualism—is shown to be incoherent. The demonstration that personal identity is not closed but open points collectively in one of two new directions: either there are no continuously existing, self-identical persons over time in the sense ordinarily understood—the sort of view developed by philosophers as diverse as Buddha, Hume and most recently Derek Parfit, what the author calls Empty Individualism—or else you are everyone, i.e., personal identity is not closed under known individuating and identifying borders, what the author calls Open Individualism. In making his case, the author:

Just for starters, we wouldn’thave had the material for our books without Ann Gayden Calland Julia Morgan Hall Hays, our wonderful Southern mothers. We miss them every day, and, whenever we think we might beturning into them, we thank our lucky stars. Both were greatDelta conversationalists, and both gave the lie to William ButlerYeats’ contention that souls are had only by those who are “notentirely beautiful.” They were belles of every ball and quietlycourageous—and they knew all the gossip. (P.S. We never sit onstrange commode seats or say s-t-i-n-k.)We can’t thank our agent Gail Ross enough—without Gailwhat we have come to jokingly refer to as our “pastel trilogy”(our three “Southern lady books” have pastel covers) would notvAcknowledgmentsexist. Gail shaped and sold the idea and has supported usthroughout the process. We have also been fortunate to work with a great team atHyperion. We especially thank Leslie Wells for her deft touchwith prose and because, a Virginian transplanted to New York, she still speaks Southernese—what more could we ask? Well, one more thing you get in Leslie is an editor who is consider-ate of authors and gets back to you so quickly you think she’sable by some mystical means to read your copy almost beforeyou’ve hit the “send” button. Anybody who writes for a livingknows how much this means. We are indebted to a host of friends and relatives who sharedstories about their mothers and allowed us to use their treasuredrecipes; we must also thank Gayden’s witty nephew Hugh Dick-son Gayden Miller for essential help with the sidebars. We originally considered making a list of great Southernmothers we have known, mothers of our friends, mostly, but werealized this was too fraught with peril—we inevitably wouldleave out somebody whose charm and kindness has nourishedus. So let us just say a general thanks to Southern mothers wehave know
