Making a Market for Acts of God: The Practice of Risk Trading in the Global Reinsurance Industry - Original PDF
Making a Market for Acts of God: The Practice of Risk Trading in the Global Reinsurance Industry - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Paula Jarzabkowski, Rebecca Bednarek, Paul Spee خلاصه: Reinsurance is a financial market that trades in the risk of unpredictable and devastating disasters - such as Hurricane Katrina, the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, and the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre. Such disasters are increasing in both frequency and severity, with the cost of their losses mounting rapidly. Reinsurance insures insurance companies, enabling them to pay claims arising from these losses. It is thus a market mechanism that is a critical part of the social and economic safety net, helping to pick up the pieces after disasters. Yet, how is the risk of such disasters calculated and traded in a global market? This book brings to life the reinsurance market through vivid real-life tales that draw from an ethnographic, "fly-on-the-wall" study of the global reinsurance industry over three annual cycles. The authors shadowed underwriters around the world as they traded risks through multiple disasters. For instance, this book takes readers into the desperate hours of pricing Japanese risks during March 2011, while the devastating aftermath of the Tohoku earthquake is unfolding. To show how the market works, the book offers authentic tales gathered from observations of reinsurers in Bermuda, Lloyd's of London, Continental Europe and SE Asia as they evaluate, price and compete for different risks as part of their everyday practice. Understanding how this market for disasters works has never been more critical given the impact of climate change and increased global connectivity, where a flood in one country can trigger losses to supply chains around the world. The authors develop a novel concept of how global markets work, which advances scholarship and challenges current thinking about how financial markets trade in intangible assets such as risk. This book will be useful to readers interested in markets for disasters, insurance, reinsurance and financial markets, and academics interested in the practice of financial markets specifically or the practice of strategy and organizations generally.

Idiot's Guides: Options TradingTrading on Sentiment - Original PDF
Idiot's Guides: Options TradingTrading on Sentiment - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Logue, Ann خلاصه: Options are powerful tools for managing financial assets. They can be used to manage risk, generate income, and make money. They’re also complicated. Let’s get that upfront. As a result, too many investors shy away from options because they confuse “complication” with “risk.” Others are led astray by advisers who take advantage of the complication to recommend high- commission, low-return strategies. It’s unfortunate, but it happens. Because options are complicated, though, they are an ideal topic for a book like this. Here, I break down the terminology and function of options to help you understand how you can use them to manage risk and to make money. An option is a contract that gives you the right to buy or sell something at a predetermined price on a predetermined future date. You are not obligated to exercise the contract, so you won’t unless it is to your advantage to do so. Most options are not exercised. It sounds like a goofy thing, doesn’t it? It sounds like something that’s not quite real, not quite practical, and possibly sketchy, doesn’t it? Perhaps it sounds like something that’s used by finan- cial people just to confuse the rest of us. However, options have real value. Suppose you think about an option in another way: as insurance. Your car insurance policy gives you the right, but not the obligation, to file an accident claim up to the amount of value of the car while the policy is in force. You don’t have to file a claim, and it might not be worth your while to even file it if you do have a minor accident that will cost less to repair than to cover your deductible. And yet, that policy has real value to you even if it expires unused. An option is a form of insurance. It is written on the value of an underlying asset, such as a share of stock, a market index, or a foreign currency. Some people buy options to insure against an unfavorable price change.

Quantitative trading - algorithms, analytics, data, models, optimization - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Wong, Samuel Po Shing خلاصه: This chapter gives an overview and some historical background of quantita- tive trading, the title of this book. It begins with a historical review of the evolution of the trading infrastructure, from verbal communication and hand signaling in an exchange to electronic platforms, in Section 1.1. It then gives in Section 1.2 an introduction to quantitative trading strategies and in par- ticular, the time-scales associated with different classes of strategies. In this connection, we give in Section 1.3 a brief historical account of the paradigm shift from the “efficient market hypothesis” (EMH) to arbitrage opportuni- ties via quantitative trading. In Section 1.4, we describe “quant funds” that use these quantitative trading strategies, and also the closely related mutual funds and hedge funds. An overview of the algorithms, analytics, data, models, and optimization methods — the subtitle of this book — used in quantita- tive trading is given in Section 1.5. Section 1.6 discusses the interdisciplinary background of the book and the anticipated diversity of its target audience. It also provides suggestions on how the book can be used by different groups of readers. Supplements and problems are given in Section 1.7.
Professional Trading Strategies: What Real Traders Need to Succeed - Original PDF
Professional Trading Strategies: What Real Traders Need to Succeed - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Jared Wesley خلاصه: At its very core trading is simply a game of ‘statistical probability.’ No matter how perfect a setup is, it could fail. No matter how poor a setup is, it could still work. The key to being a profitable trader is consistency. Approaching each trading day and each individual trade the same way everyday. This gives us an edge. Then through proper money and trade management we simply let this ‘edge’ make us money. In order to do this we need a solid foundation in technical analysis, as well as reliable trade and money management techniques. As you will see in the coming pages, there are many different trading strategies, as well as many different ways to manage each trade. Your job is to choose 1-2 of these strategies/patterns, apply a simple, straight forward management approach and then duplicate this process everyday. The simple, organized, consistent trader makes money. The overcomplicated, unorganized, inconsistent trader generally quits out of frustration. Keep in mind, these comments are being made by profitable traders who have been through the ups and downs this business presents and have learned the ‘secrets’ of trading success.

Small Powers and Trading Security : Contexts, Motives and Outcomes - Original PDF
Small Powers and Trading Security : Contexts, Motives and Outcomes - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Michael Intal Magcamit (auth.) خلاصه: This book examines why and how small powers link their security interests and trade agendas, and how security threats influence the facilitation and outcome of their trade activities. In doing so, it analyses the increasingly complex connections between trade and security, demonstrating how these linkages affect the overall security of four small but important states in East Asia. Focusing on the role of high levels of internal and external insecurities, marginal geo-economic size and peripheral geopolitical position, and multidimensional and multidirectional security contexts and threats, the author concludes that for every security enhancement that a linkage creates a consequent security risk is generated. In other words, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines are effectively trading their security. This innovative book will appeal to political scientists, economists, and security and trade experts.
