نویسندگان: Ph.D., Ginger Lapid-Bogda خلاصه: Organizational coaching is a premier personal and professional development method in which the coach guides another individual toward the achieve- ment of specific goals. In fact, coaching has become the fastest-growing human resource profession over the past two decades. A variety of people function as coaches—for example, managers, mentors, and “professional” coaches, such as certified coaches, human resource personnel, trainers, psy- chologists, and organizational consultants. With the proliferation of coaches worldwide, it is especially important that individuals who coach others un- derstand what coaching is, how it works, and how to ensure that it actually produces results. The following story briefly illustrates both the potential challenges and dramatic benefits of coaching. Louise had asked for executive coaching. However, each time she met with her coach, Maurice, she would either arrive late or leave early, and she frequently canceled her appointments altogether. Frustrated, Maurice devel- oped a six-page document that compared Louise’s coaching goals with infor- mation he had learned thus far about Louise’s behavior. The data came from several sources: Louise herself; interviews with Louise’s manager, peers, and subordinates; and Maurice’s own observations. While Maurice had devel- oped this document as a coaching tool for his own use, Louise desperately wanted to see it. After convincing Maurice to give her the document, Louise proceeded to defend her behavior and to argue over even the smallest details. Just one month later, however, Louise’s manager and coworkers were stop- ping Maurice in the hallway to remark about the dramatic changes in Louise’s behavior. All wanted to know not only how he had done it, but also how he had helped her change so dramatically in such a short period of time. As this story suggests, it can be difficult to determine what really causes changes in someone’s behavior or whether coaching actually achieves long- lasting results. At the same time, coaching has become the most effective method for increasing an individual’s personal, interpersonal, and organiza- tional effectiveness. Because coaching usually takes place as a one-to-one interaction between a coach and a client, it is a unique and highly individual- ized developmental experience.

نویسندگان: Addison-Wesley خلاصه: The content of the book ranges in nature from nontechnical examples through technical details that some readers might find hard or strange. That's okay—not every reader will understand every item in this book. Because the book can help you put some basic security in place, some parts are rather technical. If you have to skip sections or come back later, that's fine. My goal is to present the material in a technically accurate way while trying to make it understandable for nontechnical readers. That is a broad range to cover, and I'm sure some people will feel some areas are too technical or not technical enough. For readers who want more technical information, I've included links and resources that can cover nearly all topics in this book to a far greater depth. On the other hand, if you find something that is too technical for you, feel free to skip ahead a bit. As you become familiar with the topics and discussions, you can go back and read again later. Although users of non-Windows operating systems such as Linux, Macintosh, or BeOS will find the conceptual parts of this book useful, the main focus is on the Windows family of operating systems most often found in homes and small businesses. Additionally, users seeking advanced technical discussions of security or in-depth scripting and coding analysis of tools will not find them in this book. Those areas of discussion are outside the scope of this book. I will, however, provide links and references to those subjects as appropriate throughout the text of the book.

Get A Great Job When You Dont Have A Job - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Marky Stein خلاصه: What’s Going On Behind the Scenes? It has been estimated that when a job is advertised in a major metropolitan newspaper and on a few key Internet job sites, a human resources staffer or hiring manager may have as many as 350 résumés crowding his inbox or the corner of his desk on a daily basis. Do you think that such a person reads every one of those résumés from start to finish? The answer, you may be sur- prised to find out, is no. It takes a very special résumé to grab your reader’s attention and keep her reading all the way through when she may have already seen and thrown away 200 résumés before getting to yours. That’s just the kind of résumé you’re going to have by the end of this Section. How, then, do we know how to write that special résumé? Did we learn it in school? Probably not. Did our parents show us how to do it? Maybe, but has the result worked for you? Have you ever read a book or seen a career counselor who could really tell you that magic formula that you could repeat, again and again, to achieve the same favorable results? If not, why not? The fact is that too many people and the majority of books about résumés focus on the résumé itself rather than turning their target to deep down inside the emotions and the mind of the reader. If you’re going to get an interview by sending someone your résumé when there are almost 349 competitors a day up against you, you’re going to need to know more than just how to write something neat and clean that lists your job history on it; you need inside, tested, and proven particulars about how to make that employer pick your résumé.

The Undercover Economist: Exposing Why the Rich Are Rich, the Poor Are Poor--and Why You Can Never Buy a Decent Used Car! - PDF
نویسندگان: Tim Harford خلاصه: An economist's version of The Way Things Work, this engaging volume is part field guide to economics and part expose of the economic principles lurking behind daily events, explaining everything from traffic jams to high coffee prices. The Undercover Economist is for anyone who's wondered why the gap between rich and poor nations is so great, or why they can't seem to find a decent second-hand car, or how to outwit Starbucks. This book offers the hidden story behind these and other questions, as economist Tim Harford ranges from Africa, Asia, Europe, and of course the United States to reveal how supermarkets, airlines, and coffee chains--to name just a few--are vacuuming money from our wallets. Harford punctures the myths surrounding some of today's biggest controversies, including the high cost of health-care; he reveals why certain environmental laws can put a smile on a landlord's face; and he explains why some industries can have high profits for innocent reasons, while in other industries something sinister is going on. Covering an array of economic concepts including scarce resources, market power, efficiency, price gouging, market failure, inside information, and game theory, Harford sheds light on how these forces shape our day-to-day lives, often without our knowing it. Showing us the world through the eyes of an economist, Tim Harford reveals that everyday events are intricate games of negotiations, contests of strength, and battles of wits. Written with a light touch and sly wit, The Undercover Economist turns "the dismal science" into a true delight.

A Guide to the End of the World: Everything You Never Wanted to Know - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Bill McGuire خلاصه: Thousands of people die every year from floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, hurricanes and typhoons. Yet compared to what the Earth endured in prehistoric times-lethal volcanic winters, deadly asteroid collisions-our civilization has developed against a backdrop of relative geological calm. Will this calm last? A Brief Guide to the End of the World looks at the frightful prospects that await us in the 21st century and beyond. Bill McGuire, a leading expert in the field of geological hazards, admits that the omens are less than encouraging. Only 10,000 years after the last Ice Age, the Earth is sweltering in some of the highest temperatures it has ever seen. Overpopulation and the relentless exploitation of natural resources, combined with rising temperatures and sea levels induced by greenhouse gases, are increasing the likelihood of natural catastrophes, from continuing El Ninos, to large-scale glacial melting, to mega-tsunami. Even more disturbing is the near certainty that we are headed toward another asteroid or comet collision on the scale of the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. In this provocative and immensely readable guidebook, McGuire discusses when these catastrophic events are likely to take place, how they will effect our global society, and what we can do to increase our chances of survival--from emissions reductions, to massive geo-engineering schemes, to the colonization of space. Illustrated with photographs and diagrams, and backed by meticulous research, A Brief Guide to the End of the World sheds new light on the extraordinarily vulnerability of our planet, and on our capacity to withstand the dramatic changes Mother Nature has in store for us in the distant--or not so distant--future.
