Universities hope to boost their national ranking by spending on high-speed internet access, new gyms, concert halls, and better student housing. Faculty salaries are expensive. The median salary for a tenure professor is $76,200. Many colleges are trying to shrink class sizes and reduce class loads so professors can do more research and bring glory to the University. What type of loans are available? A Perkins loan offers a 5% fixed interest rate and a maximum borrowed amount of $20,000. Stanford loan is a variable rate loan capped at 8.25% and a 4% upfront fee. How much should you borrow? None is the correct answer. If you don't have money then don't go to college. Save your money then go to college. If you yield to temptation and accept a loan then your loan payments once you graduate shouldn't exceed 10% of your expected monthly gross. You will have 10 years to repay the student loan. If you earn $40,000 then your payback will be 4,000 a year (10%) or about 340 dollars a month for a $26,000 dollar loan. The average undergraduate loan is about 26k. 50 percent of the student enrolled in college do not graduate and leave the college with heavy student debt. If you graduate making less than 40k the loan repayment amount will be overextended in ratio to earnings. Instead of 10 percent of your wages the loan will represent 15 to 20 percent. The heavier debt loan increases the risk of default.

I picked this book up at Borders as my first book on homebuilding, and was glad that I did. It was a quick and easy read, and its friendly, informal, confident style makes the first-time homebuilder feel that perhaps doing it yourself is not so daunting a task after all. The book contains enough detailed explanations and drawings to give one a feel for what kind of work is involved in all the various stages of a typical passive solar homebuilding project, while remaining brief enough as to not be too intimidating. However, I agree with the previous reviewer that this is only a snapshot of one particlular way of building an energy-efficient house, and many alternatives are not covered, for example, alternative insulating wall materials such as straw bales or SIPS board. Also, the book is biased towards construction in far-north climates and does not extensively address the needs of warmer regions where keeping the house cool may often be a bigger concern than keeping it warm. Also, the authors seem overly obsessed with putting up completely airtight vapor barriers on their interior wall surfaces; they themselves describe high interior humidity problems that they had as a result. And personally, I would not want to live inside an airtight plastic bubble! It is my understanding from talking to architect friends that you want water vapor to be able to get out of your house, while preventing moisture from coming in, via selective membrane type sheathing materials such as Tyvek. Other sources I've read (e.g. straw bale books) seem to agree that it is possible for a wall to allow water vapor to pass through relatively freely while still retaining a good insulation value. But, aside from those qualifications, I found this book to be a reasonably good, gentle introduction to what's involved in DIY passive solar homebuilding, at least for wood-frame homes of a certain typical style.

First, let me say this, I love DotNetNuke. Second, I hate skinning DotNetNuke. As a developer that is my weakest area. In fact, to quote Scott Hanselman: "The difference between a Designer and Developer, when it comes to design skills, is the difference between shooting a bullet and throwing it." - Scott Hanselman with apologies to Larry Miller DotNetNuke Skinning Tutorial makes the design element of DotNetNuke a little easier. It does not automatically make your designs pretty, but it opens up the mystery of creating a design that is functional and usable. I must say thanks to PACKT Publishing for continuing to produce books that break down complicated task in a clear and concise way. If there were one thing that I would add in the next edition of the book, since they use the DotNetNuke Starter Kit install package, is to expose how to install the Starter Kit on Visual Studio 2008, when Visual Studio 2005 is not installed on the PC.
