نویسندگان: S. E. Gontarski خلاصه: Tennessee Williams, T-shirt Modernism and the Refashionings of Theater reappraises the received wisdom that Williams’s work fell into decline in the late 1960 as the Naturalism he was associated with, not always through his own choice, was replaced by European theatrical experimentalism and as culture saw a lifting of sexual restrictions. It suggests, instead, that Williams was always experimental, always more Chekhov than Ibsen, a lyrical playwright inflected with the poetry of Harte Crane, and that his late plays are as central to Williams’s reshaping of American theater as those works of the immediate post–World War II era that brought him fame and fortune. Its general aim, then, is to engage the perception that “Tennessee Williams is the greatest unknown playwright America has produced” (David Savran, City University of New York). In many respects the work of Tennessee Williams, after a protracted period of neglect, is primed for reappraisal , reinterpretations and, subsequently, re-stagings. This work is part of that process, academically at very least, but performatively as well as academic reinterest often regenerates theatrical reinterest. Read less

TALENT DEVELOPMENT IN PARALYMPIC SPORT: RESEARCHER AND PRACTITIONER PERSPECTIVES - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Nima Dehghansai, Ross A. Pinder, and Joe Baker خلاصه: dentifying and developing talented athletes to their fullest potential is a central concern of coaches, sports scientists, and sports policymakers. However, there is currently limited practical and theoretical knowledge for those working in Paralympic sport. A systematic review by our research team (Dehghansai et al., 2017a), for example, highlighted the clear lack of literature examining athlete development. Subsequent studies (Dehghansai et al., 2017b; Dehghansai & Baker, 2020; Dehghansai et al., 2020, 2022, 2021, Houlihan & Chapman, 2017; Patatas et al., 2020, 2022) from research groups around the world have expanded our understanding, and provided the impetus for this book, which aims to synthesize the most up-to-date research with practice across international Paralympic sport systems (e.g., from those in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, United States, Netherlands, and New Zealand). As part of Australia’s preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, two of the authors/editors have experienced first-hand the potential opportunities for supporting athlete development. We have witnessed rapid performance trajectories, the quality and passion of coaches and other practitioners working in this field, and the creativity required to solve problems. We also observed (and experienced) many of the challenges that are highlighted and discussed at length throughout this book. We worked closely with sports which, during this period (i.e., 2016–2021), resulted in athletes winning medals at the 2020 Paralympic Games who were not even participating in that sport during the time of the previous Paralympic Games (i.e., Rio 2016 Paralympic Games

MEDIA STUDIES THE BASICS SECOND EDITION - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Julian McDougall and Claire Pollard خلاصه: INTRODUCTION TO THE SECOND EDITION Eight years on from the first edition of this book, any notion that updating it for a second edition would be quick or straightforward was dispensed with at the start of the process. We imagine that updating other books in this series might involve replacing some examples, refreshing the core concepts with new theories, perhaps reviewing the ‘shelf-life’ of some case studies. But for Media Studies, the subject never stands still, so this is more like a total system upgrade than a software update. For this reason, the second edition is a collaboration, to converge the perspective of the author of the original book with the experience and insight of the editor of MediaMagazine, also a teacher trainer in the subject. Maybe you have picked up this book because you’re starting a course in Media Studies (given the title, it’s a fair guess). Perhaps you are an English teacher diversifying into Media Studies. Or you could be a parent, wondering what Media Studies is really all about and whether your child should spend their time engaging with it. We will argue that in the era of social media platform capitalism and ‘fake news’, it’s more important than ever. If you are a Media student, the assumption will be that you’ve never studied it before – this is, after all, ‘The Basics’, although it might be a useful ‘refresher’ even if you have. All the way through, the emphasis will be on distinguishing between everyday media engagement and critical media literacy. Just by being alive in the contemporary ‘mediated’ world, we all respond actively to media – we never just ‘take it in’ without any thought or interpretation and more and more, we create it. Equally, the distinction between ou

The Life of Alfred Russel Wallace - Original PDF
نویسندگان: ross a. slotten خلاصه: he anthrop olo g ist Loren Eiseley, popularizer of the history of evolutionary thought, famously referred to the nineteenth century as “Dar- win’s Century.” Although his book of that name is concerned with a good deal more than Darwin, the phrase has contributed to the myth of a lone sci- entist ultimately triumphing over universal opposition. Darwin was not alone, however. Another man also discovered the theory of natural selection, and he championed the theory as vigorously as did Darwin. His name was Alfred Russel Wallace. Although he was the century’s greatest explorer- naturalist, few besides scholars know very much about him. For a time, Wal- lace shared the limelight with Darwin. It was Wallace who forced Darwin to publish The Origin of Species; indeed, were it not for Darwin, the nineteenth century probably would be known as “Wallace’s Century.” Darwin, cautious to a fault, had been laboring for some twenty years on his theory, amassing what he hoped would be enough data to change the minds of the majority of his fellow scientists. At the time, most people be- lieved that species had been separately (and divinely) created. Only two men knew the true nature and import of Darwin’s work: his friends the botanist Joseph Hooker and the geologist Sir Charles Lyell. Darwin had begun to or- ganize his material into a multivolume book to be entitled “Natural Selec- tion.” But an extraordinary thing happened. Sometime in June 1858, Darwin received a packet postmarked from the island of Ternate in the Dutch East Indies. The packet contained an essay by Alfred Russel Wallace, a thirty-five- year-old English naturalist with whom Darwin had struck up a correspon- dence three years earlier. The essay, “On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely from the Original Type,” shocked Darwin. Wallace wrote: We believe that there is a tendency in nature to the continue

Financial Innovations and Monetary Reform - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Jean-François Serval · Jean-Pascal Tranié خلاصه: Many economics textbooks have explained the slow transformation from a sub- sistence economy to a barter economy, thus limited by the comparability of the objects or services exchanged. Although an improvement over the subsistence economy, the barter economy remains cumbersome and inefficient, as it requires the simultaneous acceptance of a transaction by both parties with physical delivery. The barter economy eventually gave way to a financial economy that was made possible by the issuance of money, a potentially universal intermediate means of payment, conducive to labor specialization and economic development.1 The Greek civilization and the emerging monetary system that resulted from it led international trade for centuries (from the fifth to the first century BC). Dur- ing this period of antiquity, the countries surrounding the Mediterranean became a world of commercial and industrial competition with the Greeks, the Phoenicians in the west and the Medes on the southeastern border as the players

Finance Capitalism and Income Inequality in the Contemporary Global Economy - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Kuat B. Akizhanov خلاصه: Rising inequality in income distribution is one of the most persistent global challenges, widespread not only in low- and middle-income coun- tries but also in industrialised ones. There is an increasingly alarming sta- tistics on wealth and income disparity as, for instance, four consecutive Oxfam reports have witnessed. Thus, in 2015 the wealthiest 62 individuals owned as much wealth as 3.6 billion people compared with 388 individu- als in 2010. Their wealth had increased from 2010 by 44% or $542 billion, while the wealth of the bottom 50% of the world’s population dropped by 41%, or over one trillion dollars (Oxfam, 2016). By 2016, just eight mostly white men possessed the same amount of wealth as the poorest half of the global population and the richest 1% controlled more wealth than the rest of the globe. Between 1988 and 2011 the incomes of the poorest decile rose by less than $3 a year compared with a 182-fold increase of the richest 1% (Oxfam, 2017). In 12 months of 2017 the incomes of the world’s elite increased by $762 billion which was enough to eradicate extreme poverty seven times over. Between 2006 and 2015 worker income rose by an aver- age of just 2% a year compared with a 13% increase for billionaires per year. In 2017, top 1% earners received 82% of all growth in global wealth, whereas the poorest half of the world population did not benefit at al

Trevor Winchester Swan, Volume II - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Peter L. Swan خلاصه: We now come to the first set of papers which made Trevor Swan famous. When Trevor Swan moved to the chair at the ANU he continued to dwell over the problems of internal and external balance which had been concerning him as an advisor to Prime Minister Menzies and even earlier when he was developing his econometric model of the Australian economy. In particular he was concerned that the very rapid immigra- tion programme, and the investment required to equip the newly arriving migrants would lead to excess demand in the economy and so create difficulties for policymakers in their attempts to achieve full employment, low inflation and a satisfactory outcome on the balance of payments (see Swan, 1949, 1950a, 1950c, 1950d). As early as November 1952, Swan wrote a paper, Simple Algebra (1952) which is included in this volume, for a meeting of economists at the Commonwealth (Central) Bank in Sydney addressing the issue of simultaneously achieving three objectives:

Understanding Economic Transitions - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Berhanu Abegaz خلاصه: Around 1990, about a quarter of the world’s population lived in middle-income socialist economies and another quarter in high-income and middle-income cap- italist economies. The remainder lived in low-income economies with varying admixtures of planning, markets, and informal exchange institutions. Forty years later, the remaining outposts of socialism are Cuba and North Korea, while a few others (mainly in the former states of the Soviet Union) wallow in the no man’s land of neither functional capitalism nor socialism. The USSR sustained seven decades of statist socialism between 1922 and 1992, Central Eastern Europe (CE) and Southeastern Europe (SEE) for nearly five decades, and China for a little over three decades. By 2000, nearly all have systemically “transitioned” from a centrally-planned economy to some form of a decentrally organized market economy. How and why large parts of Europe, Eurasia, and East Asia transitioned out of the capitalist system in 1917–1952, how they managed to industrialize in non-market settings, and how and why they came back to the capitalist fold are questions comparative economic systems seek to address. Furthermore, this wrenching structural change entailed a concomitant political transition from a monoparty system to an illiberal multiparty system in formerly socialist Europe and the former Soviet Union (FSU). Comparative Economic Systems (CES) focuses on the workings of institu- tional economic mechanisms across economic systems and income levels. CES, at the macro-, meso-, and micro-levels, dwells on the two foundations of an economic system: ownership types for productive assets (state vs. private) and the degree of centralization of decision-making over resource allocation and income distribu- tion (plan vs. market). The conceptual entry points are incentives (known rewards or residual legatee rights) and the sources of discipline (bureaucratic-based or market-based competition). More broadly, Comparative Economics (CE), which is broader than CES, melds the study of economic systems with historical insti- tutionalism and development economics to explore the determinants of prosperity and inequality properties over time and across economic space within a given economic system

Rethinking Economics Starting from the Commons Towards an Economics of Francesco - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Valentina Rotondi • Paolo Santori خلاصه: What would happen if the economics courses taught in universities focused on the topic of the commons rather than of private goods? What if the former became the main subject of study and the latter the exception in the study of economic science? What if social business, rather than being considered a hybrid form, became the typical approach, with ethical and green finance taking over the financial sector? Is it possible to move away from the primacy of consumers to the preeminence of ethical consumers who express their daily preferences for an inclusive, sustainable, and worker-friendly economic system? These and other questions are the basis of this book, which aims to systematize the academic contribution to the development of the Economy of Francesco (henceforth EOF). EOF is a global movement of young (under 35 years) economists, entrepreneurs, and changemakers who, in 2019, answered Pope Francis’ call to gather in Assisi to rethink and change the global economy. The three pillars of the EOF are Pope Francis, with his social and economic magisterium; the Franciscan economic thought of the late Middle Ages, which is a source of precious knowledge with which to imagine a new economy; and the ideas of the young people thinking, working, and living a new economy. EOF is also a forum for youth-driven inclusive dialogue, stimulating a vibrant global change toward a new economic system, one that should serve everyone, regardless of income, gender, race, class, family, or background, and one in which everyone can thrive and feel included. To achieve this goal, EOF has been structured since the very beginning along 12 thematic “villages,” i.e., working sessions rooted in topics critical for today’s economy. Each thematic village contains a tension in its title, representing the already contemporary eco- nomic systems and the not-yet economy for which the movement advocates (i.e., Agriculture and Justice, Work and Care, Co2 of Inequalities, Women for Economy, Policies and Happiness, and many more)
