نویسندگان: Katherine MacClean خلاصه: The tape isn't clear. When you said the two civilizations could economically exchange theirbyproducts, which words did you use to the nice human scientist?" Tima poised her pen over hernotes, her doggy face earnest and studious. "Did you say, Interchange, exchange, trade,mutually-consume, mutually-eat or ingest or input? And did you say byproducts, reject products, surplus, waste, excretion, excrement or shit?"Her husband, hanging upside down from the exercise bar, shrugged. "I don't remember. Someword for harmonic mutual aid or intercourse. Scientists focus on concepts. It doesn't matter whatwords I used.""It matters," she kissed the air in his direction. "You did a perfect study of the culture, yourdiplomacy was wonderful. This report must be complete in every detail. I want you to get thecredit you deserve." She resumed her note taking, listening through earphones to their recordingsof their strangely unsuccessful attempt to open an embassy on the planet Earth, in which theyalmost lost their lives

Running from Injury: Why runners get injured and how to stop it Kindle Edition - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Peter Francis خلاصه: Peter Francis saw his teenage years transformed by a miracle drug called running. His elation was soon followed by despair, in the form of 12-years of repetitive injuries. Spurred on by personal injustice, Peter pursued 3-science degrees, multiple coaching and consultancy roles before making a breakthrough in the form of what had seemed like an unlikely comeback. In 2016 aged 29-years, for the first time in his life, he ran for almost 3-years uninterrupted. This period coincided with running multiple personal bests (33:46 10-km; 78:00 half marathon). In this book, he uses a combination of his own story and his learnings spanning some 18-years of trial and error to provide a holistic explanation for why runners get injured and how best to avoid it. His personal story is as captivating as the information it imparts. Whether you are a disgruntled beginner or an Olympic hopeful, you cannot help but become more consistent having read this book.

You Can't Fight Tanks with Bayonets: Psychological Warfare against the Japanese Army in the Southwest Pacific (Studies in War, Society, and the Militar) - PDF
نویسندگان: Allison B. Gilmore خلاصه: In November 1944, during a lull in the intense fighting so characteristic of the Pacific War, a Japanese sol-dier made the following entry in his diary: ‘’I won’t go so far as to say it is absolutely impossible but I don’tthink we can win the war with Japanese spirit alone.” 1 Although the average GI would have found these wordsof little interest or importance, they were immensely heartening to Allied propagandists charged with the taskof inducing demoralization among enemy combatants. For this seemingly insignificant diary entry and manyothers akin to it provided evidence that soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA ) were losing confidencein their ability to win the “Greater East Asia War” and recognizing the vital importance played by materialfactors in wartime. Similar statements proffered by Japanese prisoners of war (POWS ) and found in documentsretrieved from battlefields throughout the Pacific were important sources of intelligence for psychologicalwarfare personnel, whose job it was to hasten Japan’s defeat by waging a propaganda campaign to diminishJapanese confidence in their ability to achieve victory.Historians have written hundreds of volumes about World War II. Many of them analyze various aspects ofthe Pacific War, and some examine the subject of psychological warfare (psywar), but rarely do these twolines of scholarly inquiry intersect. The bulk of the studies of psychological operations in World War II per-tain to the European Theater of Operations (ETO). John W. Dower’s War without Mercy: Race and Power inthe Pacific War assesses the impact of racial hatred, cultural stereotypes, and psychological factors on theconduct of the Pacific War. Yet his treatment of wartime atrocities, Japanese adherence to “death before disho-nor,” and Americans “obsessed with the task of slaughter” reveals only part of the story. 2 Although he refersto the surrender of demoralized Japanese soldiers, the subject is peripheral to his work. This is understanda-ble given his focus, yet one is left with a very clear impression that such occurrences were extraordinarily rareand insignificant events. More problematic is Dower’s assertion that Americans in decision-making positionswere so singularly unimpressed with the idea of waging a serious propaganda campaign against the Japanesethat “such ideas had little impact.”3 In fact, this is not the case. Psywar was not an afterthought on the part ofAllied military commanders, nor was it always perceived as some ‘’impractical plaything of effete civilians.”4In their attempts to demoralize Japanese troops Allied propagandists in the Southwest Pacific alone dissemi-nated nearly 400 million propaganda leaflets and witnessed the capture of approximately 19,500 Japanese pri-soners.

نویسندگان: Rick A. Morris, Brette McWhorter Sember خلاصه: Welcome to a Project Management That Works: Real-World Advice on Com-municating, Problem Solving, and Everything Else You Need to Know to Getthe Job Done. The growth in project management is undeniable and is one ofthe fastest-growing occupations in the world. PMI ® has seen membershipgrowth of 1,000 percent in the last 10 years, with members in 157 countries. The membership continues to rise at a rate of 30 percent each year. The U.S.Department of Labor predicts explosive growth for the profession through2014. Because this is such an exploding profession, there is a great need for aguidebook to help both new and experienced project managers improve theirskills and procedures. This book is designed to do just that.Roughly 7 years ago, I was part of one of the worst projects that I have everencountered. I was always away from my family, was not excited about myjob, and depressed. I was questioning whether or not I wanted to remain aproject manager or choose another career path. I decided to walk aimlesslythroughout a mall while I contemplated my future. I ended up in a bookstoreand wandered over to the business section. I picked up a book called RadicalProject Management by Rob Thomsett. It was a new take on some commonproject management theories and presented new ways of looking at managingprojects. I was so enthralled by the book that I read it cover to cover rightthere in the store. It made a significant impact on me and how I manage proj-ects. I decided to stay a project manager.Reflecting on that time, I decided that I wanted to write a book that didmore than just discuss proper project management techniques. Really, Iwanted to write a book that was a culmination of the lessons learned, frustra-tions, and events that have been experienced throughout my career. This isthat book. There is a significant gap between the principles of project manage-ment and the application of project management in many corporate environ-ments. I often compare it to taking a driving test. We were all taught that yourhands should be kept at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel, to signal a certain dis-tance from a turn, and how to properly merge. Yet, almost all of us will breakmany of those rules when we get behind the wheel of a car. Project manage-ment is the same way. Trained project managers learn the principles and rea-sons for running a successful project. However, when it comes to running theproject, we tend to selectively decide what we will and will not do

نویسندگان: Sabrina Jordan خلاصه: Chapter OneIam a girly-girl.With three older brothers who areobsessed with sports and cars and videogames, it would have been easy for me to growup a tomboy, but I didn’t.From the time I was little, I’ve loved beinga girl! Dresses with ruffles. Colored tights.Shiny black Mary Janes. I used to wear themall! Very rarely would I wear T-shirts andjeans, but if I did, there was always somethingfeminine about them. Like my jeans wouldn’t1be blue. They’d be yellow or purple andtrimmed with lace on the cuffs. And my T-shirts would say things like: DADDY’S LITTLEGIRL or SWEET AS SUGAR.I used to have tea parties with my stuffedanimals and I would serve cakes made with myEasy-Bake oven. Cliché, I know. I even hadevery Barbie imaginable, including all theaccessories, as well as a few Bratz dolls.Confession: I always loved my Barbies morethan my Bratz dolls. Barbie just seemed moreelegant. And she had her own Dream House!I’ve always had pierced ears. My oldestbrother, Rob, who’s nineteen and just finishedhis first year of college, says this is becausewhen I was a baby and our mom used to takeme out in my carriage, people would alwaysstop her and say, “What a cute baby boy!” eventhough I was wearing pink and I had a PebblesFlintstone hairstyle (a tuft of hair sticking upon the top of my head and tied with a bright-colored ribbon).Earrings are fun. My jewelry box is filledwith all sorts of different styles. Some days I2like wearing tiny hoops. Other days I likewearing earrings that are long and dangling.Sometimes I’ll just go simple and wear goldstuds. My mom has a fabulous earring collec-tion and sometimes she’ll let me borrow a pair, but only if I ask permission. Sneaking into herjewelry box is not allowed. That’s because herearrings are made of real gold and silver anddiamonds while mine are all pretty much cos-tume jewelry. When I was little, my mom used to braidmy hair in pigtails. Some days she’d give me aponytail. But whatever hairstyle she gave me,she always used silk ribbons and cute barrettesand hair clips. My hair is still long and I lovestyling it in different ways. No short-and-sassyhairstyle for me! My hair reaches past myshoulders to the middle of my back and thecolor is chestnut brown, although sometimes, like during the summer, if I’m out in the sun fora long time, highlights will appear. My bestfriend, Caitlyn, is always telling me she wouldkill to have my hair. I don’t know what she’scomplaining about. Her hair is super curly and3a gorgeous red color. Not carrot red but a richauburn. Like in shampoo ads in magazines. Butshe hates the color and is always trying tostraighten the curls out of her hair.Caitlyn and I have been best friends sincekindergarten. On the first day of school, weboth brought our Cabbage Patch Kids toschool for show-and-tell. The dolls were identi-cal and we decided that they were long-lost sis-ters and it was up to us to make sure theystayed in touch.Caitlyn practically lives at my house andwhen we’re not hanging out together, we’reeither on the phone or instant messaging whenwe’re online. We tell each other everythingalthough there’s a secret I’ve been keepingfrom her. It’s not that I don’t want to tell her mysecret, but I can’t. I’ve been told that part of thejob I’ve just taken is keeping my identity asecret.I know this all sounds mysterious and con-fusing, but it really isn’t. And there’s a perfectlylogical explanation.4This September I’ll be a freshman at NorthMarshall High School and I’ve been picked toinherit the job of being the anonymous fresh-man advice columnist, Dear Daisy, for the highschool’s website. Daisy has been around forever.I think she was even giving out advice whenmy parents were both freshmen there! Beforewebsites existed, she had her own column inthe school’s newspaper. Every year a newfreshman takes over as Daisy, writing the col-umn and dispensing advice.Working on my junior high’s newspaper, writing and editing articles, is what got me thejob of Dear Daisy. I know the importance ofextracurricular activities. Colleges look for thatkind of stuff in addition to good grades, so it’snever too early to start participating. My guidance counselor, who I met when Iwent to pick up my class schedule in June, wasthe one who told me about the Dear Daisyposition. He thought I would be good at it, buthe also told me that there were five other girlswho were just as qualified as I was to take overthe column. If I was interested in becoming5Dear Daisy, then I’d have to submit a samplecolumn and after all the columns were com-pared, a decision would be made

Making Capitalism in China: The Taiwan Connection - PDF
نویسندگان: You-tien Hsing خلاصه: ew generations ago, the very idea ofretirement was foreign to the vast ma-jority of Americans. Retirement wasfor the well-to-do. Most peopleworked until they couldn’t physically(or legally) work any longer. They lived a few moreyears in greatly reduced circumstances—often withtheir adult children—and then they died. Social secu-rity was in its infancy, and anyhow, it was just a mini-mal safety net for the last couple of years of life.Company-paid health insurance and pensions wereuncommon. Most people’s lifetime earnings didn’tallow for much retirement savings, and the elderlywere the poorest age group in America. In the last 30 years or so, all of this has been turnedtopsy-turvy by simultaneous revolutions in health care, employment rights, pensions and government policiesthat encourage tax-deferred saving. Today most work-ers are protected from mandatory retirement by theAge Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) thatcovers workplaces of more than 20 employees and mostoccupations other than some such as highly paid execu-tives in policy-making positions, tenured university fac-ulty, fire fighting and law-enforcement personnel. On the other hand, many people who saved aggres-sively while they were young are able to retire muchearlier than age 65.Today millions of elderly Americans now live com-fortably in retirement, with income from a combina-tion of social security, private pensions and their ownsavings. Many retirees have significant health carecoverage from their previous employees.ixIntroduction
