To settle ourdisagreement they gave us $500 which we donated to launchAdvocacy For All, a new initiative to help parents advocatemore effectively on behalf of their children. At last!’ said a woman with a voice like ice.The man behind the torch snickered. ‘Who was it thatsaid the best place to hide something was in plain sight? What an idiot.’ His accent was odd, ominous.‘Just do it!’ hissed the woman.prologueGrasping the heavy torch tight in his gloved hand, the man brought it down like an axe. The surface had ahoneycomb sort of texture comprised of many holes of varyingsizes. A thin band of silver circled the orb, dividing it into twoequal hemispheres. The woman pushed aside her white-blonde hair andheld the mysterious object to her perfectly shaped ear. As sheturned it over, it whispered like an open bottle in the wind.‘I can almost hear him,’ she gloated. ‘That horridmonster!’‘You’re so sure he’s alive? It’s been four, five hundredyears . . .’‘A creature like that – so impossible to make – is all themore impossible to kill,’ she replied, still listening to the ballin her hand.A small red bloodstain now marked her white glovewhere one of the glass shards had cut through; she didn’tseem to notice. ‘But now he can escape us no longer. نویسندگان: Kwanho You خلاصه: Adaptive control has been a remarkable field for industrial and academic research since1950s. Since more and more adaptive algorithms are applied in various control applications,it is considered as important for practical implementation. As it can be confirmed from theincreasing number of conferences and journals on adaptive control topics, it is certain thatthe adaptive control is a significant guidance for technology development. Also adaptive control has been believed as a breakthrough for realization of intelligentcontrol systems. Even with the parametric and model uncertainties, adaptive control enablesthe control system to monitor the time varying changes and manipulate the controller fordesired performance. Therefore adaptive control has been considered to be essential for timevarying multivariable systems. Moreover, now with the advent of high-speed microproces-sors, it is possible to implement the innovative adaptive algorithms even in real time situa-tion.With the efforts of many control researchers, the adaptive control field is abundant inmathematical analysis, programming tools, and implementational algorithms. The authorsof each chapter in this book are the professionals in their areas. The results in the bookintroduce their recent research results and provide new idea for improved performance invarious control application problems. The book is organized in the following way. There are 16 chapters discussing the issuesof adaptive control application to model generation, adaptive estimation, output regulationand feedback, electrical drives, optical communication, neural estimator, simulation andimplementation:Chapter One: Automatic 3D Model Generation based on a Matching of AdaptiveControl Points, by N. Lee, J. Lee, G. Kim, and H. ChoiChapter Two: Adaptive Estimation and Control for Systems with Parametric andNonparametric Uncertainties, by H. Ma and K. LumChapter Three: Adaptive Output Regulation of Unknown Linear Systems withUnknown Exosystems, by I. Mizumoto and Z. IwaiChapter Four: Output Feedback Direct Adaptive Control for a Two-Link FlexibleRobot Subject to Parameter Changes, by S. Ozcelik and E. MirandaChapter Five: Discrete Model Matching Adaptive Control for Potentially In-versely Non-Stable Continuous-Time Plants by Using Multirate Sampling, by S.Alonso-Quesada and M. DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS OF WORLD WAR II - PDF
نویسندگان: James F. Dunnigan خلاصه: This is not a history of World War II , but revelations about many of thelesser-known details. Because it is a book of facts, you don't read itfrom beginning to end, but rather you jump in wherever it strikes yourfancy. There are over three hundred separate items, each a completestory in itself. As a rule, much of the information found in one section of the bookwill usually also be applicable to the others as well. After all, althoughaircraft carriers are inseparably associated with the Pacific war, theyalso performed yeoman service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, while the problems of troop transport transcended theater. After reading this book, you'll never look at World War II the sameway again. We have not changed the story of that conflict; we areproviding information about it that is not generally known. We oftenlook at the same subject from several different angles, giving you abetter appreciation of, for example, how a blitzkrieg was conducted, what it took to supply partisans, and why the U.S. Army had moreships than the U.S. Navy.World War II was the most enormous human drama in history. Noone volume could ever really come close to examining all of theunusual, and often important, aspects of this, history's greatest war. Somuch has had to be left out, from the drama of Dunkirk to the U.S.Navy's coal-burning, paddle-wheel aircraft carriers on the Great Lakes;from the Marine Corps's Navaho communications specialists to the12 INTRODUCTIONJapanese Navy's "American" pilots; not to mention the improbableadventures of FDR's son, the extraordinary antiarmor tactics of theFinns, and the secret missions of Harry Hopkins. Also left out are manyinteresting items from the "secondary" theaters such as China, Burma,Finland, and the Middle East. Moreover, the end of the Cold War hasthrown open the Soviet World War II archives. Much fascinating ma-terial is coming out. We were shown a volume (in Russian) of some ofthe newly revealed material already being published in Russia andrealized that we could have added several dozen pages of previouslyunknown goodies for this book from that one Russian volume alone.Well, if we sell enough copies of this book, there may be more. Wecertainly have enough to fill several more volumes. This book undoubtedly displays an "American" bias. This is nat-ural, given the audience. Without much difficulty the authors couldproduce a book of similar length with a "British" or "German" or"Chinese" bias which, while being somewhat repetitive, would stillmanage to include a lot of unusual and interesting material. World War II was the most enormous human drama in history, and there is farmore to be told about it than can possibly be included between thecovers of a single book.

نویسندگان: Julia Quinn خلاصه: ―Annabel!‖Annabel snapped to attention. Louisa was addressing her with uncommon urgency, and she‘d dowell to listen.―Annabel, this is important,‖ Louisa said.Annabel nodded, and an unfamiliar feeling washed over her—maybe of gratitude, certainly oflove. She‘d only just got to know her cousin, but already there was a deep bond of affection, andshe knew that Louisa would do everything in her power to keep Annabel from making anunhappy alliance.Unfortunately, Louisa‘s power was, in this capacity, limited. And she did not—no, she couldnot—understand the pressures of being the eldest daughter of an impoverished family.―Listen to me,‖ Louisa implored. ―Lord Newbury‘s son died, oh, I think it must be a bit over ayear ago. And he started looking for a wife before his son was cold in his grave.‖―Shouldn‘t he have found one by now, then?‖Louisa shook her head. ―He almost married Mariel Willingham.‖―Who?‖ Annabel blinked, trying to place the name.―Exactly. You‘ve never heard of her. She died.‖Annabel felt her eyebrows rise. It was really a rather emotionless delivery of such tragic news.―Two days before the wedding she took a chill.‖―She died in only two days?‖ Annabel asked. It was a morbid question, but, well, she had toknow.―No. Lord Newbury insisted upon delaying the ceremony. He said it was for her welfare, thatshe was too ill to stand up in church, but everyone knew that he really just wanted to make sureshe was healthy enough to bear him a son.‖―And then?‖―Well, and then she did die. She lingered for about a fortnight. It was really very sad. She wasalways very kind to me.‖ Louisa gave her head a little shake, then continued. ―It was a near missfor Lord Newbury. If he‘d married her, he would have had to go into mourning. As it was, hehad already tried to wed scandalously soon after his son‘s death. If Miss Willingham hadn‘t diedbefore the wedding, he‘d have had another year of black.‖―How long did he wait before looking for someone else?‖ Annabel asked, dreading the answer.―Not more than two weeks. Honestly, I don‘t think he would have waited that long if he thoughthe could have got away with it.‖ Louisa looked about, her eyes falling on Annabel‘s sherry. ―Ineed some tea,‖ she said.

نویسندگان: David Niven خلاصه: Steve Burkett likes to talk about families—his family, your family, families in general. “Just think for a minute about the kinds ofmessages we receive every day,” says Steve, a retired sociologist, aparent, and a grandparent. “We read that people are workinglonger hours to avoid being with their families. We hear thatdivorce rates have hit a record high. Extended families don’t existand elderly family members in need are cast aside. Meanwhile, children are out of control, doing things that boggle the imagina-tion. It’s in the newspapers, the TV news, the shows and movies wewatch, the songs we listen to. We have a family-averse popular cul-ture, and we’re in danger of having a family-averse culture.“We wouldn’t be here without families. We literally would not behere. And yet the message out there is ‘run and hide.’ It’s like anall-encompassing public health warning—except it’s about the illsof marriage, of sibling relationships, of dealing with parents, ofdealing with children. I just saw a study with experts referring topeople in their early twenties as being in an extended adolescence, while they are now calling adolescence an extension of toddleryears, which is like saying the twenties are an extension of the ter-rible twos.“A family structure is as old as recorded time,” adds Steve, “andyet here we are, theoretically advanced in so many ways, and wehear about family life as if it’s some kind of extreme, dangerousxisport like cliff diving. And the worst of it is, for far too many peoplethat’s true. Too many people feel their family life is out of controlor just plain unfulfilling.”Polls confirm that many people share Steve’s concerns. Whenasked whether they thought morals were improving or declining, eight out of ten said declining. When asked why, their most fre-quent response was the instability of marriage and family.Steve says that the long-held expectation that every new genera-tion would enjoy advantages unknown to previous generationsfeels like it is being turned on its head. “We may have more free-dom than ever, more ability to choose our paths in life, but ourfamily life is going backward,” he says. All this at a time when“families are more important than ever.”
