Bringing out the best in everyone you coach: use the enneagram system for exceptional results - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Ph.D., Ginger Lapid-Bogda خلاصه: Organizational coaching is a premier personal and professional development method in which the coach guides another individual toward the achieve- ment of specific goals. In fact, coaching has become the fastest-growing human resource profession over the past two decades. A variety of people function as coaches—for example, managers, mentors, and “professional” coaches, such as certified coaches, human resource personnel, trainers, psy- chologists, and organizational consultants. With the proliferation of coaches worldwide, it is especially important that individuals who coach others un- derstand what coaching is, how it works, and how to ensure that it actually produces results. The following story briefly illustrates both the potential challenges and dramatic benefits of coaching. Louise had asked for executive coaching. However, each time she met with her coach, Maurice, she would either arrive late or leave early, and she frequently canceled her appointments altogether. Frustrated, Maurice devel- oped a six-page document that compared Louise’s coaching goals with infor- mation he had learned thus far about Louise’s behavior. The data came from several sources: Louise herself; interviews with Louise’s manager, peers, and subordinates; and Maurice’s own observations. While Maurice had devel- oped this document as a coaching tool for his own use, Louise desperately wanted to see it. After convincing Maurice to give her the document, Louise proceeded to defend her behavior and to argue over even the smallest details. Just one month later, however, Louise’s manager and coworkers were stop- ping Maurice in the hallway to remark about the dramatic changes in Louise’s behavior. All wanted to know not only how he had done it, but also how he had helped her change so dramatically in such a short period of time. As this story suggests, it can be difficult to determine what really causes changes in someone’s behavior or whether coaching actually achieves long- lasting results. At the same time, coaching has become the most effective method for increasing an individual’s personal, interpersonal, and organiza- tional effectiveness. Because coaching usually takes place as a one-to-one interaction between a coach and a client, it is a unique and highly individual- ized developmental experience.

You Have to Admit It's Getting Better: From Economic Prosperity to Environmental Quality - PDF
نویسندگان: Terry L. Anderson خلاصه: To the doomsayers who maintain that natural resources are being depleted and the environment is getting worse, Terry Anderson and his fellow contributors offer a bold retort: it's getting better all the time. They present a powerful argument that, through such established institutions as property rights, the rules of law, and limited government, economic growth and environmental quality will both flourish. You Have to Admit It's Getting Better shows how, by focusing our energies on developing and protecting the institutions of freedom, rather than on regulating human use of natural resources through political processes, we can in fact have our environmental cake and eat it, too. The book offers a number of often-surprising revelations that debunk many commonly held beliefs about the future of our environment. It shows, for example, how liberalization of international trade is more likely to improve environmental quality than reduce it. It also explains how the prosperity and improved human well-being that we enjoy today are not leaving future generations worse off, but leaving them with more capital and larger stocks of natural resources. Throughout the book, the authors repeatedly show that economic growth is not the antithesis of environmental quality: rather, the two go hand in hand if the incentives are right.

Never Bet the Farm: How Entrepreneurs Take Risks, Make Decisions--and How You Can, Too - PDF
نویسندگان: Anthony Iaquinto, Stephen Spinelli Jr. خلاصه: Two leading entrepreneurs destroy common myths-and misconceptions-about business start-upsIn Never Bet the Farm, Anthony Iaquinto and Stephen Spinelli turn much of the so-called expert advice for entrepreneurs on its head. The authors-both highly successful entrepreneurs-refute the idea that there is an ideal entrepreneurial "type," and show that luck can be as important as a business plan in many enterprises. Above all, the authors emphasize that entrepreneurship is a career, not a one-time event. If budding capitalists learn to prepare for the worst, they can better take advantage of good fortune, especially when luck and planning point to success. Outlining 15 key principles for every smart start-up, this book provides the antidote for unrealistic expectations and defeatism.Anthony Iaquinto (Tokyo, Japan) has started three businesses, including a language school and two restaurants. Previously a professor at Nanzan University, he helped found an MBA program, based on the American MBA model, at Tokyo's Aoyama Gakuin University. Stephen Spinelli Jr. (Boston, MA) is cofounder of Jiffy Lube International. He is currently Vice Provost at Babson College and holds the John H. Muller Jr. Chair in Entrepreneurship. He is also Director of the Arthur M. Blank Center for Entrepreneurship.

The coming generational storm: what you need to know about America's economic future - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Laurence J. Kotlikoff, Scott Burns خلاصه: In 2030, as 77 million baby boomers hobble into old age, walkers will outnumber strollers; there will be twice as many retirees as there are today but only 18 percent more workers. How will America handle this demographic overload? How will Social Security and Medicare function with fewer working taxpayers to support these programs? According to Laurence Kotlikoff and Scott Burns, if our government continues on the course it has set, we'll see skyrocketing tax rates, drastically lower retirement and health benefits, high inflation, a rapidly depreciating dollar, unemployment, and political instability. The government has lost its compass, say Kotlikoff and Burns, and the current administration is heading straight into the coming generational storm. But don't panic. To solve a problem you must first understand it. Kotlikoff and Burns take us on a guided tour of our generational imbalance, first introducing us to the baby boomers - their long retirement years and "the protracted delay in their departure to the next world. Then there's the "fiscal child abuse" that will double the taxes paid y the next generation. There's also the "deficit delusion" of the under-reported national debt. And none of this, they say, will be solved by any of the popularly touted remedies: cutting taxes, technological progress, immigration, foreign investment, or the elimination of wasteful government spending. So how can the United States avoid this demographic/fiscal collision? Kotlikoff and Burns propose bold new policies, including meaningful reforms of Social Security and Medicare. Their proposals are simple, straightforward, and geared to attract support from both political parties. But just in case our elected officials won't take the political risk to chart a new direction, Kotlikoff and Burns also offer a "life jacket" - guidelines for individuals to protect their financial health and retirement.

Veterinary Immunology 10E - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Ian Tizard BVMS, PhD, ACVM (Hons), DSc (Hons) خلاصه: This textbook was first published in 1977, at a time when veterinary immunology was relatively new and poorly understood. Nevertheless, it was recognized, even then, that immunology held the key to many of the significant issues in veterinary medicine. The importance of immunology has not declined since then, except among those tasked with establishing college curricula. The decline in basic science instruction at colleges of veterinary medicine in favor of more clinical training has resulted in graduating a generation of veterinarians whose knowledge of immunology is minimal. Yet immunology continues to be a key science. It is central to our understanding of major veterinary issues such as vaccination, cancer, infectious diseases, and allergies. It has been tempting to dilute the contents of this text and its associated website to conform to current curricular trends. I have resisted this. Because the amount of knowledge of immunology required to obtain a veterinary degree has been progressively reduced, the need to document the science in depth has correspondingly increased. This book therefore continues to grow as the result of opening up new, exciting areas of the science. Veterinarians need to know much of this if they are to practice cutting-edge science in the 21st century. Read it, study it, and enjoy its wonderful complexity. Over the many years that this textbook has been published we have seen many changes in the science of immunology. In most cases, these changes have been gradual in nature as investigators add detail to existing knowledge. Occasionally, however, major leaps are made that effectively revolutionize the discipline—socalled paradigm shifts. For example, in the late 1990s, the concept of innate immunity was accepted. Inflammation and other processes were finally recognized as being essential components of the immune system and the dual innate and adaptive immune systems were shown to complement each other. It is interesting to note that this was not a new discovery but a new way of looking at well recognized processes. This new edition also reflects revolutionary changes in the way we think of immunology. Like the concept of innate immunity, these changes are not a result of a previously unknown process but a belated recognition of something known about since the dawn of microbiology, the body's normal microbiota. New methodologies and intensive studies have revealed that many body processes, especially immunity, are regulated by the diverse microbiota that colonizes all body surfaces. Much of immunology has had to be reassessed in the light of this new knowledge. Both innate and adaptive immunity are regulated by those organisms, especially bacteria, that live in the intestine and respiratory tract and on the skin. Many previously unexplained phenomena have now been shown to depend on the normal microbiota. As a result of this new information, the reader will encounter the microbiota at every turn in this book, plus a completely new chapter on the subject. The second new chapter deals with allergic diseases. For many years, these were readily explained by the production of IgE against allergens. The most recent information, however, has demonstrated that allergies are much more complex than this. For example, atopic dermatitis, one of the most common conditions seen by small animal veterinarians, is likely a syndrome with multiple complex causative factors. As a result, allergic and inflammatory diseases deserve a new chapter. These additions cannot, however, hide the fact that the rest of immunology also continues to move forward. Thus the mechanisms by which the body rejects gastrointestinal helminths has been clarified with the discovery of the importance of tuft cells and interleukin-33. Associated with this has been the recognition of the complex nature of innate lymphoid cells and their subpopulations. Some of these advances can be considered routine, such as the identification of new cell surface molecules and many new cytokines. New disease syndromes such as swine SCID, bovine neonatal pancytopenia, and immune-mediated keratoconjunctivitis are now described, and the pathogenesis of others such as atopic dermatitis, type I diabetes mellitus, equine laminitis, and systemic lupus are shown to be more complex than previously believed. New advances in therapy are covered, including the introduction of immune checkpoint therapy in cancer and the use of monoclonal antibody therapy and intravenous immunoglobulin therapy for immune-mediated diseases. The exciting new developments in the use of nanoparticles in vaccines and as adjuvants are now described. The significant roles of vitamins A and D as well as the aryl hydrocarbon receptor in immunity are also recognized. Advances in basic science that are now discussed include new findings on the structure and genetics of bovine antibodies, epigenetics, RNA interference, microRNA, macrophage polarization, and type 1 and type 2 immune responses. I make no apologies for the size and complexity of this text. Immunology is a complex subject that has a direct bearing on many of the most important areas of veterinary medicine. Students, as well as graduate veterinarians, ignore it at their peril. Finally, readers are strongly encouraged to visit the Evolve website for this text. The site is also constantly evolving and improving. In it you will be able to find a collection of more than 450 multiple-choice questions (with the answers!) keyed to each chapter; a set of flashcards also linked to chapters; all the text figures available as PowerPoint slides; and a collection of animations kindly provided by Dr. Abul Abbas, as well as brand new animations created for this textbook, designed to clarify some complex processes and pathways where still figures are inadequate. All the chapter references are keyed to PubMed. There are also new hand-outs that students can print off and use as a reference, should you wish. It is my hope that these assets will help you remain current in this rapidly expanding and exciting field.
